I love DEGRASSI!!! The show is all about this high school called Degrassi, the kids that go to it, and their relationships. There is so much drama; for instance, in one episode there is a school shooting. The drama can really get intense. It’s definitely one of those shows where you’re biting your nails and sitting on the edge of your seat. Degrassi is a Canadian T.V. show and I really like how different it is than American television. On American T.V., the writers only create one version of a scenario (and one that is very P.C.). The Canadians show every possible version of that scenario. A perfect example of this is the show Secret Life of the American Teenager. On this show, the writers/producers only portray this one close-knit family where the teenage unwed mother keeps her baby. Whereas, on Degrassi, they present different story lines where one girl gives a baby up for adoption, another girl keeps her baby, a third has an abortion, and another only has a pregnancy scare. It’s nice that the Canadians aren’t afraid to show that there isn’t only one option, that not everyone is the same, or has the same belief system.
I must admit that at times Degrassi does go a little overboard, and is sometimes a little repetitive, but no one seems to mind it that much, or at least my friends and I don’t. It’s true that it also gets a bit ridiculous sometimes, but truthfully it kinda puts life in perspective. Even though the show goes overboard, there is that little piece in the back of your mind that says, this really happens…somewhere in the world, and it makes you realize that your problems aren’t that bad.
There are so many great characters on the show; I’m not sure if I can pick a favorite, they present a very diverse group of people. Degrassi is definitely a “PG-13” type of show and might not be suitable for younger kids but unlike the opposing side, I love the show.
Mike Says:
Degrassi, I have seen only a few episodes of this show, and from what I have seen the show is atrocious. It seems to be horribly unrealistic and it’s just a lot of teenage drama that for some reason people just adore. I will admit that I can’t judge a show until I have seen more than 3 episodes, but I have very strong doubts my feelings about this show will get any better. I really can’t seem to figure out why this show is so popular, because it seems like nothing more than 7 or eight seasons of junk.
First of all, I find the show to be incredibly far from realistic. For example there is no god damn way there are so many incidents in one single high school. I was first just channeling surfing and I stumbled upon it and within 10 minutes somebody had been shot. That seems like a very large convince unless things like that happen all the time. The show also portrays physical bullying of that dooly kid with the long hair several times throughout the story, and I’m not sure if you have noticed but almost all bullying today is hollow threats and hurtful words. I don’t know how so much crap can go down in one school like that, but if it does, I sure as hell don’t want to go to school in Canada.
It also sends negative thoughts to those younger than 14. I know of many people who watch this show who aren’t even in high school yet. I was nervous enough when I first started high school, but seriously I would have been scared shitless if that was actually happening. But it really isn’t, so for anybody still in middle school reading this, high school is NOTHING like what is shown in that idiotic show. DO NOT WATCH THIS SHOW, IT DOES NOTHING BUT ADD STRESS and we are already stressed out enough right?
